Mission & Values

"St. John's Hospital provides a ministry of exceptional health care services to the people of central Illinois in the Catholic tradition of compassion, justice, and reverence for life."

Our mission's two facets -- business and spiritual -- help us redefine our purpose every day. The business side manages the realities of how to serve those that need our help, while the spiritual side focuses on the people who come to be healed. That spiritual focus sets us apart -- surfacing in the values we hold and our commitment to service.

Respect

Recognizing that every person, from time of conception, is a creature of God.

As healthcare professionals, we see and treat people with injuries and ailments every day. It is important to remember that even though caring for patients is a regular occurrence for us, being cared for is not a regular occurrence for our patients. For them it is a new, and possibly, scary experience. We need to place ourselves in their shoes and show respect for them and how they are feeling.
Terri Gustafson, Physical Therapist, Rehabilitation

Competence

Competence means that our work is performed and our hospital is managed hospital is managed with the highest level of skill and ability. We are committed to recruiting and developing people who are competent in their work and whose values reflect our own. Our values are an integral part of our hospital’s strategic plan, which provides the overall framework for local activities.

Competence is always putting 100% into everything you do. By showing that you are competent in your skills, you are respecting yourself and those around you.
Amy Leverenz, RN, Pediatrics

Care

Care embodies the concern, compassion, and sensitivity with which we care for patients as individuals on a one-to-one basis. It depicts our way of dealing with patients, clients, employees and co-workers. Many times it is thought of as a bedside behavior, but it also belongs in business offices, cafeterias and board rooms.

We learn from St. Francis of Assisi to love and care for all God’s creation. Care for me is about safety and comfort for our patients and their families. To be successful in caring for them, we must take good care of our work surroundings. Our co-workers also deserve care and respect. Our community also needs us to have a caring attitude toward its people and its animals.
John Brown, Procedural Tech, Surgery

Joy

Joy is the manner is which our staff members and all who join us in our ministry seek to perform their work — the internal fulfillment of caring for others. It is an essential ingredient in bringing a sense of hope to those who suffer.

It is a joy to work at St. John's Hospital where employees not only can acknowledge and thank our Creator, but we also are privileged to serve and protect His most precious creation: human life.
Elizabeth Sheraden, Secretary, Center for Living
